Andhra Pradesh Refuses To Defend Trans Rights Law

The NDA-ruled Andhra Pradesh government has refused to defend the Centre's 2026 amendments to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act in the Supreme Court. The State stated it had no role in enacting the law and its constitutional validity is a matter for the Union government. The amendments removed self-perceived gender identity rights and limited the definition of transgender persons. Meanwhile, the BJP-ruled Uttarakhand government has defended the amended law, citing social norms and existing systems.

शासित आंध्र प्रदेश सरकार ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट में ट्रांसजेंडर व्यक्ति (अधिकारों का संरक्षण) अधिनियम, 2026 के केंद्र के संशोधनों का बचाव करने से इनकार कर दिया है। राज्य ने कहा कि कानून बनाने में उसकी कोई भूमिका नहीं थी और इसकी संवैधानिक वैधता का मामला केंद्र सरकार का है। संशोधनों ने स्व-पहचाने गए लिंग पहचान के अधिकारों को हटा दिया और ट्रांसजेंडर व्यक्तियों की परिभाषा को सीमित कर दिया। इस बीच, भाजपा शासित उत्तराखंड सरकार ने सामाजिक मानदंडों और मौजूदा प्रणालियों का हवाला देते हुए संशोधित कानून का बचाव किया है।
