The incident occurred during a demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Zayn Marie, along with actor Imran Khan and hundreds of others, was taken into police custody. She sustained injuries on both hands, fingers, and legs. The protest was called by Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi, and around 400 people were detained.
