First Human Death Linked To Schmallenberg Virus in France
Aaj Tak · health
A patient in France has died from the Schmallenberg virus, marking the first recorded human infection. The patient was already suffering from severe illnesses and had a weakened immune system. The virus, primarily affecting cattle and other livestock, is transmitted by midges and was first identified in Nigeria in 1965. It has since spread to over 12 European countries. While officials are investigating the link between the virus and the patient's neurological issues, the WHO currently assesses the risk of widespread human transmission as low.
