New coffee beans offer hope for Indian growers

As climate change impacts Arabica coffee cultivation, Indian growers are exploring diverse bean species like Excelsa, Libex, and Gesha. Traditionally, 99% of global coffee is Arabica or Robusta, with India growing both. Arabica, favoured for flavour, is endangered by rising temperatures. Robusta is hardier but lower in flavour. New varieties like Libex, a homegrown hybrid, show resilience to heat and drought, potentially securing India's coffee future and expanding sustainable growing regions.

जलवायु परिवर्तन से अरेबिका कॉफ़ी की खेती पर असर पड़ रहा है। ऐसे में भारतीय किसान एक्सेल्सा, लिबेक्स और गेषा जैसी नई कॉफ़ी की किस्में आज़मा रहे हैं। दुनिया की ज़्यादातर कॉफ़ी अरेबिका या रोबस्टा होती है, और भारत में भी ये दोनों उगती हैं। अरेबिका का स्वाद अच्छा होता है, पर बढ़ती गर्मी से उसे खतरा है। रोबस्टा ज़्यादा मज़बूत है, पर स्वाद में कम।
