Chennai's Urban Expansion Fuels Flood Risks, Study Reveals

Times of India · environment

A University of Madras study highlights that rapid urban expansion, reduced vegetation, and shrinking water bodies are increasing flood risks in Chennai. Key flood-risk areas include Velachery, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Koyambedu, and Tondiarpet. Between 2000 and 2024, Chennai's built-up area increased by 7.6%, while vegetation cover dropped by 26.14% and water bodies by 22.54%. The research recommends integrating land-use planning and drainage assessments for better flood-risk management. Tamil Nadu has identified over 2,000 vulnerable locations with specific mitigation and response plans.
