Kelvin Waves To Raise West Coast Sea Levels By Up To A Foot

Hindustan Times · environment

Sea levels along the US West Coast are set to rise by up to a foot this month due to Kelvin waves, pulses of warm water moving north. These waves, common during El Niño events, lift sea levels and can amplify the effects of high tides and storms, increasing flooding and beach erosion risks. Experts predict these elevated sea levels will persist from October through February. Beyond coastal impacts, the waves also raise ocean temperatures and push nutrient-rich waters deeper, affecting marine life.
