Kolkata Stampede: No Evacuation Plan, Panic Announcement Caused Deaths

Times of India · india

A probe into the Chorbagan stampede has revealed critical crowd management failures, including the absence of an emergency evacuation plan and poorly regulated entry and exit points. Investigators believe these lapses, combined with heavy rain and a surge of visitors, led to the disaster that killed 19 people. Seven individuals, including two puja committee office-bearers, have been arrested and remanded in police custody. A panic-inducing announcement about the pandal collapsing, though unverified, is believed to have triggered a fatal rush towards the exit.
