Europe Faces Winter With Record Low Gas Reserves, Warns IEA Chief

Al Jazeera · world

Europe is entering winter with historically low gas reserves, making it vulnerable to further supply shocks, according to International Energy Agency chief Fatih Birol. He warned that rising costs for liquefied natural gas (LNG) are likely in the coming months, even if peace returns to the Middle East. With EU natural gas storage only 72 percent full, down from the usual 90 percent, a harsh winter could lead to significantly higher prices. Energy ministers are reportedly considering rationing consumption for households and businesses.
