MPPCB Chairman Appointment Faces Legal Challenge From Activist

Environmental activist Ajay Dubey has questioned the appointment of senior IAS officer Aniruddhe Mukherjee as the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) chairman. Dubey argues that Mukherjee's assumption of the role lacks a separate statutory appointment order or Gazette notification, which he believes is required. Government officials, however, cite a November 2022 notification that designates the Principal Secretary of the Environment Department as the ex-officio chairman. They contend that Mukherjee's additional charge of the department covers his chairmanship, a practice followed previously.

पर्यावरण कार्यकर्ता अजय दुबे ने मध्य प्रदेश प्रदूषण नियंत्रण बोर्ड (MPPCB) के अध्यक्ष के तौर पर वरिष्ठ IAS अधिकारी अनिरुद्ध मुखर्जी की नियुक्ति पर सवाल उठाए हैं। दुबे का तर्क है कि मुखर्जी के इस पद को संभालने के लिए कोई अलग वैधानिक नियुक्ति आदेश या गजट नोटिफिकेशन नहीं है, जो उनके अनुसार जरूरी है। हालांकि, सरकारी अधिकारियों का कहना है कि नवंबर 2022 की एक अधिसूचना है जो पर्यावरण विभाग के प्रधान सचिव को पदेन अध्यक्ष के रूप में नामित करती है। उनका तर्क है कि मुखर्जी द्वारा विभाग का अतिरिक्त प्रभार संभालने से उनकी अध्यक्षता भी कवर हो जाती है, जैसा कि पहले भी होता रहा है।
