Supreme Court Suggests Independent Commission For Legal Education Reform In India
Hindustan Times · education
The Supreme Court of India has urged the Union government to establish an independent National Legal Education Commission to govern legal training. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant highlighted the need for dedicated, multi-disciplinary governance, moving away from the Bar Council of India's dual role. The BCI, responsible for both academic standards and practicing lawyers, has struggled to update syllabi and align with national reforms like the NEP 2020. This judicial push aims to address systemic regulatory deficits and a disconnect between legal education and broader higher education policies.
