The summer of 2026 was the hottest on record in Europe, surpassing the previous record set in 2003. Germany alone experienced an unprecedented number of hot days, with average temperatures reaching at least 30 degrees Celsius on about 22 days and over 35 degrees Celsius on five days. This extreme heat is estimated to have caused over 16,300 deaths in Germany by the end of August, primarily exacerbating underlying health conditions.
