DW World · world

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for a woman to succeed President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, noting that Germany has never had a female head of state in its 77-year history. Merkel suggested it is time to consider a female candidate for the largely ceremonial role. Several women are reportedly being discussed, including Bavarian parliamentary speaker Ilse Aigner and former Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. The Federal Convention is scheduled to elect the next head of state on January 30, as Steinmeier cannot seek a third term.
