Madras HC Upholds Speaker's Decision on 6 AIADMK MLAs' Resignations

TOI - Delhi · india

The Madras High Court has dismissed a petition challenging the Tamil Nadu Assembly speaker's acceptance of resignations from six AIADMK MLAs. These MLAs had cross-voted in favour of the ruling TVK government and subsequently joined it. The court ruled that the resignations were genuine and voluntary, and the speaker was not required to conduct an extensive inquiry into the MLAs' motives. The bench stated that accepting resignations is a distinct constitutional process from disqualification proceedings. The court also directed the speaker to conclude disqualification proceedings within two months.
