The Maldives recently marked 900 Hijri years since its conversion to Islam, an event that transformed the nation into an Islamic sultanate. This transformation occurred in 1153 CE when the last Buddhist king embraced Islam, leading to the destruction of Buddhist monasteries and the establishment of mosques. President Mohamed Muizzu led a ceremony to commemorate the anniversary, emphasizing Islam's role in protecting the nation's sovereignty and independence.
