Seven fishermen from Rameswaram and Thangachimadam in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy early Sunday morning. The fishermen were apprehended while fishing between the Katchatheevu islet and Mannar North, allegedly in international waters. Their trawler was also seized and taken to a naval port in Sri Lanka. Fishermen leaders have condemned the incident and urged both governments to facilitate their immediate release, noting the timing near the Deepavali festival has caused distress.
