The Hindu · india

The Karnataka High Court has introduced additional guidelines to prevent the arbitrary registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) by police based solely on social media posts. The court aims to protect citizens from the indiscriminate exercise of police power without adhering to legal safeguards. These directives emphasize scrutinizing the essential ingredients of an alleged offense before registering a crime. The High Court also stressed that multiple complaints stemming from the same incident should not lead to separate FIRs unless they represent distinct offenses, ensuring greater protection for freedom of expression.
