The Bombay High Court has ruled that the re-arrest of activist Arun Ferreira in 2011, immediately after his release from Nagpur Central Jail, violated his fundamental rights. Ferreira had spent over four years in jail since his 2007 arrest for alleged Maoist activities. The court found that neither Ferreira nor his relatives were informed of the grounds for his re-arrest, violating Articles 21 and 22(1) of the Constitution. The court directed the state to pay Ferreira Rs 2 lakh in compensation within eight weeks.
