El Niño and insufficient rainfall have significantly reduced banana and flower cultivation in Trichy, leading to lower market arrivals and higher prices for Ayudha Puja essentials. Shoppers faced increased costs for traditional items like banana stems, marigold, jasmine, mango leaves, and coconuts. Traders reported that prices have nearly doubled due to reduced production and strong demand, with jasmine selling for up to ₹2,000 per kilogram. Despite the price surge, residents continued to purchase necessary items for the festival's rituals, honouring workplaces and belongings.
