Indian Sailor Survives 43 Months Captivity After Somali Pirate Hijacking

Aman Kumar Sharma, then 19, endured a harrowing 43-month ordeal after his ship, MV Albedo, was hijacked by Somali pirates in November 2010. The ordeal included brutal torture, the killing of his close friend and fellow Indian sailor Raju Rajvar, and a shipwreck. Sharma and 10 other crew members managed to escape captivity and a shipwreck, finally returning to India on June 9, 2014. He now marks two birthdays, one for his birth and another for his return home.
