Nifty SIP Returns Lag Bank Fixed Deposits

Economic Times Markets · stocks

A monthly systematic investment plan (SIP) in India's Nifty50 index has yielded only 4.5% over the past five years, significantly underperforming bank fixed deposits. Over shorter periods, the Nifty50 SIP returns have been negative, with a 4.6% loss over two years and a 10.5% loss over one year. While midcap and smallcap indices showed stronger returns, concentrated Nifty50 investments have not guaranteed attractive equity gains. This performance highlights the limitations of SIPs when the underlying index stagnates or declines.
