Govt. Schools Shut Across India Due To Declining Student Enrolment: VIT Chancellor
The Hindu · india
Hundreds of government schools across India have been shut over the past decade due to a steep decline in student enrollment, according to G. Viswanathan, founder and chancellor of VIT. He stated that approximately 94,000 government schools have closed nationwide, with Tamil Nadu alone seeing around 210 closures in the same period. This trend is attributed to students increasingly shifting to private institutions, leaving many government schools with insufficient student numbers. The chancellor emphasized education's role in bridging economic disparities and called for better Centre-State coordination to improve national outcomes.
