Vermont Farmer's 1950s Dam Removal Restores Creek Floodplain
Hindustan Times · environment
A dairy farmer in Colchester, Vermont, built an earthen dam in the early 1950s to create an irrigation pond. Over decades, this dam altered the creek's flow, negatively impacting water quality, wildlife habitat, and Lake Champlain. In 2022, contractors removed the dam, draining the pond and spreading accumulated sediment. This action restored the creek's floodplain, allowing it to slow stormwater runoff and reduce the flow of soil and nutrients into Lake Champlain. The restoration aims to mitigate issues caused by the dam's previous obstruction of natural water flow.
