US mortgage rates have climbed to just below 7%, the highest level in over 19 months, with the 30-year fixed rate now at 6.95%. This marks the fourth consecutive week of increases. Higher borrowing costs add hundreds of dollars monthly to loan payments, significantly reducing buyer purchasing power and potentially delaying purchases. This trend strains the already bleak housing market, which has been in a slump since 2022 due to rising borrowing costs.
