Supreme Court to Hear PIL on Lawmaker Cases

The Supreme Court has agreed to urgently hear a 2016 Public Interest Litigation seeking the speedy disposal of criminal cases against lawmakers nationwide. Senior advocate Vijay Hansaria informed the bench that nearly 40 percent of legislators face criminal charges, with over 4,000 such cases pending against MPs and MLAs. Despite previous monitoring, the number of pending cases has remained stagnant since 2018. The court previously directed high courts to establish special benches to monitor these cases for faster resolution.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने सांसदों के खिलाफ लंबित आपराधिक मामलों के जल्द निपटारे की मांग वाली एक जनहित याचिका पर तत्काल सुनवाई के लिए सहमति दे दी है। वरिष्ठ वकील विजय हंसारिया ने बताया कि करीब 40% विधायकों पर आपराधिक आरोप हैं, जिनमें 4,000 से ज़्यादा मामले MPs और MLAs के खिलाफ लंबित हैं। कोर्ट ने पहले भी इन मामलों की निगरानी के लिए विशेष बेंच बनाने का निर्देश दिया था, लेकिन स्थिति जस की तस बनी हुई है।
