India's September Power Deficit Hits Decade High Amid Weak Monsoon and Heat

Business Standard · business

India's electricity deficit in September reached its highest level in nearly a decade, driven by a weak monsoon and hot weather. Daily peak power shortfalls exceeded 2 gigawatts for over half the month, with some days surpassing 6 gigawatts. This combined energy shortage was the worst for September since 2017. Below-normal monsoon rains reduced hydropower generation by nearly 16% and exacerbated demand due to increased air conditioning use. Logistical issues also affected coal supplies to power plants, leading to critically low stockpiles.
