India produced 454.61 million tonnes of sugarcane in 2024-25, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Beyond its familiar use for sugar, jaggery, and juice, the fibrous residue, known as bagasse, has multiple industrial applications. This residue can be used to generate electricity, produce paper, and create compostable tableware as an alternative to plastic. Research highlights that sugarcane's usefulness extends to enriching agricultural soil and serving as cattle fodder, demonstrating its significant value beyond sweetening foods.

कृषि और किसान कल्याण मंत्रालय के अनुसार, भारत ने 2024-25 में 454.61 मिलियन टन गन्ने का उत्पादन किया। चीनी, गुड़ और रस के अपने परिचित उपयोगों से परे, खोई (bagasse) नामक रेशेदार अवशेष के कई औद्योगिक अनुप्रयोग हैं। इस अवशेष का उपयोग बिजली पैदा करने, कागज बनाने और प्लास्टिक के विकल्प के रूप में कंपोस्टेबल टेबलवेयर बनाने के लिए किया जा सकता है। शोध से पता चलता है कि गन्ने की उपयोगिता कृषि मिट्टी को समृद्ध करने और पशुओं के चारे के रूप में काम करने तक फैली हुई है, जो भोजन को मीठा बनाने से परे इसके महत्वपूर्ण मूल्य को दर्शाती है।
