Kolkata Logs 28% Surplus Monsoon Rain Despite El Nino Impact

Kolkata has recorded a significant 28% surplus in monsoon rainfall this year, logging 1,718.9mm between June and September, making it the second rainiest in the past decade. This achievement is notable as it occurred despite the presence of El Nino, a phenomenon typically linked to a 13% rain deficit across India. Met scientists attribute the surplus to the regular formation of low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal, which kept the monsoon active. While July saw a slight deficit, August and September registered substantial rainfall, contributing to the overall surplus.

कोलकाता में इस साल मानसून की बारिश में 28% की बड़ी बढ़त दर्ज की गई है, जून से सितंबर के बीच 1,718.9mm बारिश हुई है। यह पिछले एक दशक में दूसरी सबसे ज़्यादा बारिश वाली जगह रही। यह उपलब्धि इसलिए भी खास है क्योंकि एल नीनो के बावजूद ऐसा हुआ, जो आमतौर पर भारत में 13% बारिश की कमी से जुड़ा होता है। मौसम वैज्ञानिकों का कहना है कि बंगाल की खाड़ी में लगातार कम दबाव वाले सिस्टम बनने से मानसून सक्रिय रहा, जिससे यह बढ़त हुई। जुलाई में थोड़ी कमी ज़रूर थी, लेकिन अगस्त और सितंबर में हुई ज़बरदस्त बारिश ने कुल मिलाकर इस बढ़त को पूरा किया।
