Uttarakhand's State Bird Adapts to Noise by Calling at Higher Frequencies
The Better India · lifestyle
The Himalayan monal, Uttarakhand's state bird, is adapting to increased human-generated noise in the Himalayas by calling at higher frequencies. Researchers compared calls in the quieter Madmaheshwar Valley with the busier Chopta Valley, finding that birds in noisier areas produced calls with higher peak frequencies and slightly longer durations. This suggests the birds are altering their communication to be heard over traffic, tourists, and pilgrims. Scientists are now studying the potential costs of this vocal adjustment for the species. The monal's native range spans across the Himalayas.
