Machchhar, despite being seriously injured, managed to open the cockpit door, allowing others to overpower the assailant and prevent a major tragedy. Singh emphasized the courage required to open the door from the co-pilot's side after being stabbed. The pilot's actions are credited with saving the lives of 174 people aboard the flight, which was diverted to Saudi Arabia.
