Circadian Depression: 1 in 4 Severe Cases Linked To Body Clock Disruptions

Times of India · science

A significant Australian study suggests that approximately 23% of severe depression cases may be a distinct subtype called "circadian depression," linked to disrupted sleep-wake cycles. Researchers found these individuals often experience morning fatigue, are night owls, and show less response to standard antidepressants like SSRIs and SNRIs. This proposed subtype, characterized by six specific sleep-related clues, could explain why some depression treatments are less effective for certain patients. The findings may pave the way for new therapies targeting melatonin or sleep consistency.
