Greenland Shark Born in 1626 May Still Be Swimming
Times of India · science
A Greenland shark, born around 1626, could still be alive today, swimming in the Arctic Ocean. Scientists estimate these sharks can live for 400 years or more, making them the longest-living vertebrate animals known. Researchers used radiocarbon dating on eye proteins to estimate the age of 28 female sharks, with the largest sampled appearing to be around 392 years old. This discovery significantly alters our understanding of animal lifespans and raises questions about aging and genetics.
