The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) has banned the recruitment of Indian seafarers in Malaysia's Sarawak Region due to recurring fatal accidents. This decision follows concerns over the deaths of young Indian seafarers over the years. The DGMA directed Recruitment and Placement Service Licence (RPSL) companies not to employ Indian seafarers on Inland, Riverline, and Coastal Vessels in Sarawak. Additionally, RPSL agencies must ensure mandatory insurance cover of at least ₹1 crore per seafarer for those engaged on foreign-flagged vessels not covered by P&I insurance.
