India Today · world

Sri Lanka has clarified that US secondary sanctions announced in August are part of a global policy and not specifically aimed at the island nation. This statement follows media reports suggesting Washington warned Colombo against allowing local companies to service Iranian tankers stranded off its coast. The Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that US measures, issued on August 24, warn that entities servicing sanctioned vessels risk losing access to the US financial system. Sri Lankan authorities previously noted the Iranian tankers were outside territorial waters and were being monitored.
