Fatty Liver Affects Young Indians, Raising Heart Disease and Diabetes Risks

Hindustan Times · health

Fatty liver, now called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is common even in young, healthy-weight Indians, with one in four adults aged 18-30 affected. This condition, driven by insulin resistance, signals increased risks for heart disease and diabetes. If it progresses to scarring, it threatens the liver itself, with advanced stages significantly raising the risk of dying from liver disease. While scarring can retreat, new drugs like Resmetirom and Semaglutide show promise in improving it, though their long-term impact on preventing cirrhosis or death is still under study.
