Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered troops to neighbouring Niger to safeguard shared energy and economic interests, following parliamentary approval. This marks Algeria's first overseas military deployment since 1973, a significant departure from its usual policy of non-intervention. The deployment is a response to a request from Niger authorities and aims to protect economic infrastructure, including Algerian oil facilities. It follows previous incidents of destabilisation attempts and aims to address security concerns in the Sahel region.
