Delhi's Pollution Control Measures Lead To Increased CO2 Emissions From Traffic Jams

Times of India · environment

Delhi's recent ban on non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside the city, aimed at reducing pollution, is inadvertently causing increased carbon dioxide emissions due to traffic congestion at border checkpoints. Vehicles idling in queues at the Gurgaon and Ghazipur borders are releasing significant amounts of CO2. Calculations estimate that a 10-minute wait could emit around 123 kg of CO2 at Gurgaon and 9-12 kg at Ghazipur. Experts suggest that addressing air pollution requires more than just vehicle technology changes, emphasizing the need for dust-free roads and unified action across state borders.
