Scientists have successfully grown lettuce, mustard, wheat, radish, tomato, and peas on the International Space Station using an aeroponic-hydroponic system. Microbial analysis revealed that the edible parts of these crops had bacterial counts within Earth ranges. Crucially, all tests for foodborne pathogens like E. coli and Salmonella came back negative. This breakthrough is vital for future long-duration space missions, potentially reducing the need to transport food supplies.
