Invasive Snakes Can Swim Over 3km, Raising Fears For Endangered Birds

Times of India · environment

An experiment in Guam tested the swimming capabilities of invasive brown tree snakes, revealing that some can travel over three kilometers in water. This raises fresh concerns for Cocos Island, where conservationists are working to re-establish the endangered ko’ko’ bird population. The snakes, accidentally introduced to Guam after World War II, have already devastated native birdlife, contributing to the extinction of nine out of eleven native forest bird species.
