Bhutan Glacier Lake, Warned 5 Years Ago, Shows Signs of Bursting
Aaj Tak · environment
Scientists had warned five years ago about the potential bursting of the Shintaphu Tsho glacial lake in Bhutan's Gasa district. A 2021 study identified it as a potentially dangerous glacial lake, with its size and proximity to glaciers posing risks. The lake, holding approximately 6.2 million cubic meters of water, is held back by a moraine dam. A potential outburst could impact downstream areas in West Bengal and Assam, damaging infrastructure and affecting hydroelectric projects.
