Pro-Left Syndicate members at the University of Calicut have requested that only two stanzas of the national song Vande Mataram be sung at an upcoming honourary doctorate ceremony. The event, scheduled for October 6, will be attended by the Governor and the Minister for Higher Education. Citing the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971, they stated that singing the entire song is not mandatory. The members also urged adherence to the university's secular legacy. Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court is reviewing a petition challenging the ceremony's approval process.
