Indigo Forced on Farmers Sparked India's Freedom Struggle
The Better India · lifestyle
Indigo, once called 'blue gold', was a coveted dye. However, European planters forced Indian farmers into exploitative 'tinkathia' systems, compelling them to grow indigo on fertile land and sell it at low prices. This coercion led to widespread peasant revolts in Bengal in 1859. The subsequent Indigo Commission's findings collapsed cultivation.
