Andhra Pradesh Information Commissioner Rehana Begum has levied a ₹20,000 penalty on a Public Information Officer (PIO) for significant delays in providing information requested under the Right to Information Act. An RTI activist filed an application in November 2022, but the information was not furnished within the stipulated 30 days. Despite the PIO admitting the delay and claiming the information was eventually provided, the Commissioner rejected the explanation. The penalty is to be recovered from the officer's salary and remitted to the government treasury.
