Kedartal Lake Breach Threatens Gangotri; Floodwaters Could Arrive in 45 Minutes

TV9 Hindi · environment

A recent study by scientists from the NIH, Roorkee, warns that a breach in Uttarakhand's Kedartal lake could trigger a devastating flood. If the natural dam breaks, destructive waves could reach Gangotri within 45 minutes via the Kedarganga and Bhagirathi rivers, potentially impacting Rishikesh. The lake's size has increased by 107.5% in 35 years, currently holding approximately 1.56 billion liters of water. Scientists attribute this growth to melting glaciers caused by rising global temperatures and climate change, increasing pressure on glacial lakes.
