Environmentalists have voiced strong opposition to the Kerala Livestock Development Board's tourism project in Mattupetty grasslands, a crucial habitat for wild elephants. They warn that the project will restrict elephants' access to essential fodder and drinking water, potentially increasing human-wildlife conflict as elephants venture into populated areas. The grasslands, located near the Mattupetty Dam and along the Munnar–Top Station Road, are a significant grazing area for elephants.

पर्यावरणविदों ने मट्टुपेट्टी घास के मैदानों में केरल पशुधन विकास बोर्ड की पर्यटन परियोजना का कड़ा विरोध किया है, जो जंगली हाथियों के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण निवास स्थान है। वे चेतावनी देते हैं कि यह परियोजना हाथियों को आवश्यक चारा और पीने के पानी तक पहुँचने से रोकेगी, जिससे मानव-वन्यजीव संघर्ष बढ़ सकता है क्योंकि हाथी आबादी वाले इलाकों में घुस सकते हैं। मट्टुपेट्टी बांध के पास और मुन्नार-टॉप स्टेशन रोड के किनारे स्थित घास के मैदान हाथियों के चरने का एक महत्वपूर्ण क्षेत्र हैं।
