Times of India · world

Sri Lanka has stated it will prioritise its national interests before assisting 19 Iranian vessels seeking food, water, and fuel. A foreign ministry spokesperson cited the risk of US sanctions against Sri Lankan companies as a primary concern. While no direct warning from the US has been received, Sri Lanka is wary of secondary sanctions. The ships are located 24 nautical miles off the coast. This decision comes as Sri Lanka recovers from an economic crisis and balances its relationships with both the US and Iran, both important trading partners.
