Antarctic Blood Falls RNA Reveals Ancient Marine Microbial Community
Hindustan Times · science
Genetic analysis of RNA from Antarctica's Blood Falls has led researchers to discover a marine microbial community living in brine beneath the Taylor Glacier. This community appears to have survived for a long time, isolated from the ocean after seawater became trapped by the advancing glacier. The study found that over 60 percent of diatoms in the red mud and sediment were sea types, with genetic sequences matching those from McMurdo Sound. This suggests a long-term survival of ancient marine life, with limited modern wind input contributing to the ecosystem.
