Deaths from kidney and urinary diseases in Karnataka have nearly tripled over the past decade, rising from 5,940 in 2016 to 18,730 in 2025. This surge significantly outpaces the overall increase in medically certified deaths. Urinary tract diseases are now the third leading cause of certified deaths, accounting for 11.8% in 2025. Experts attribute this rise to increased risk factors like diabetes and high blood pressure, exacerbated by lifestyle changes. The majority of these fatalities, 87.8%, occur in individuals over 45 years old.
