Yellowstone National Park rangers have removed over 20,100 pieces of trash from geothermal areas in 2026. Common items like food wrappers and water bottles, along with over 5,000 rocks and sticks and 280 hats, were collected. Foreign materials can damage or permanently alter delicate hydrothermal features by clogging water supplies or diverting runoff. Coins, including dollars, pesos, yen, euros, and Canadian dollars, were also removed from hot springs and geysers, posing a threat to bacterial formations. Other unusual items found include camera lens caps, pacifiers, and AirPods.
