Commuters in Mumbai's local trains will soon face fines of up to ₹5,000 and potential imprisonment for playing loud music or videos on their mobile phones without earphones. Central Railway and Western Railway authorities are directing staff to apprehend offenders under Section 145 of the Indian Railways Act for causing nuisance. While warnings will be issued initially, persistent offenders will be penalised. This measure aims to ensure public transport remains a shared space where commuters respect each other's comfort, addressing a growing problem exacerbated by accessible mobile internet.
