Los Angeles Tests Road Mix Using Plastic Bottles Instead of New Asphalt

Los Angeles announced a pilot project in 2019 to test a new road repaving method using recycled plastic bottles instead of new asphalt. Developed by TechniSoil Industrial, the process grinds old road surfaces and mixes them with liquid plastic, eliminating the need for bitumen. The company claims this could reduce the carbon footprint by 90% and significantly increase road durability. While lab tests suggest roads could last eight to 13 times longer, real-world performance is still being evaluated. The technology aims to address plastic waste and improve road longevity.
